Oct31-Nov1 – Summit Point Main – PCA

Halloween Weekend… my first event on Summit Main.

I am so excited yet a bit nervous for finally having the opportunity to get away from Shenandoah.

Kyle has been here several tmes and the competitve nature in me makes me feel timid about being able to master this track as well as him.

Thankfully I have requested Alan Herod as my instructor, so I am instantly feeling better about my learning curve. I feel very comfortable with Alan in the passenger seat to guide me towards excellence!

Day 1 was not too bad, learning the track in real life as opposed to the iRacing- (which is great for learning what to expect in turns but understand it’s not true to driving the real track).

Day 2 – much more confident- reviewed traqmate data- compare mine to Kyle’s data- now I see where I can make up time, gas more, break less, coast less. I am better in some segments, he is better in others- we learn from each others data. I take away from this where I can improve and put it to the test on Sunday.

Alan gives me the solo for my last run and I hit my top lap speed of 1:34! I think I just beat Kyle’s best! I am very excited- underdog as a girl with less time on the track. It wasn’t about beating Kyle’s time- more about wanting him to be proud of me for kicking ass as a great driver!

Happy Halloween!

Nov6 – Summit Point Main – FATT

I thought this FATT was going to be a waste of a day, I hadn’t done a FATT in a while and got stuck in Group 1a (Novice). Fortunately my instructor got me moved up to Group 2i by the afternoon and I was able to experience open passing… ie passing anywhere w/point like PCA Red/Black does. That in itself made the day worthwhile!

July 12th – First AutoCross

Mary & Kyle @ Summit Point AutoCross with National Capital Chapter BMW

Our first event was going to be an AutoCross, of course neither of us really knew that autocross is NOTHING compared to a road course at speed, so we were very excited about getting the chance to try out this new beast in an environment off the street.

I was nervous about tech inspection since I didn’t know how close the techs would be looking at the car, turns out they just verified that the wheels didn’t feel like they were going to fall off, that the car was empty (so “things” wouldn’t fly around and hit you while you were tossing the car around on the autocross track), and verified that the throttle cable was unobstructed so it didn’t get stuck at WOT!  that would be a bit scary (have had it happen on the street before in my RX7).

I drove the first sessions, Mary drove the second sessions.

My sessions were uneventful, I tried to drive smooth but quick, think I ended up 7th for the day in our class.

When it was time for Mary to drive, we asked if I could ride along and instructor her since she had never done anything like this before and she was nervous about finding her way through the cones.  Nervous for a good reason!  We line up at the start and I tell her I’m going to let her drive through the course herself the first time and that I would stay quiet.  That lasted about 3 seconds when I realized that she completely drove OFF THE COURSE!  hahah, oops!  Here I am shouting and pointing, “The course is over there, go right through those cones over there and get back on the course!”  she was a bit embarrassed and I think we scared a few corner workers but no harm was done.  Her next 3 runs she got quicker and quicker and ended the day placing 8th in her class, just 1 second behind me.

after a fun and wet day at summit point auto-x we drove home a bit tired from the adrenaline and excitement.

Sept11 – Summit Point Main – FATT

Kyle @ FATT – More solo time.  Rain, lots of it, feel the threshold of traction! Driving in the rain is one of the best track learning experiences you can have… allows you to get the car to the edge of traction while still at relatively low speeds.

Aug 14-16 – Summit Point Main – PCA

3 Days @ Summit Point Main with the Potomac Founders Porsche Club of America and my first Solo sessions!

First 3 day event, wow was I tired afterwards, but had a great time, progressed significantly and was thankful the porsche guys were welcoming to a BMW-wiener. haha
